DESCRIPTION OF THE BUILDINGΤhe tower of "Aga Giannakis" is one of the two preserved towers in the settlement of Ano Vathi. It is a residence with a fortified character, that is built in the oldest part of the settlement near the tower of “Captain Lachana”. The building has a small square floor plan, solid masonry structure, with small and limited openings and large height. This tower currently hosts a modern residence and for this reason has undergone interventions which have altered many of its authentic architectural features. The main façade, was actually, what is today the rear façade of the building. This is evident by the existence of the arched openings with the full-shafted stone architrave, but also the existence of fragments of the funnel, called a “katachistra”, just above the entrance opening of the present rear façade. The main façade of the house today was originally the back elevation of the tower, and the current openings must have been opened at a later stage. Nowadays, the tower has three levels, while in its original form it must have had one more level. According to the scholars, there is a possibility, that the tower had a flat roof and battlemented parapet, instead of the gabled roof that it has today, in correspondence with other towers in Samos. The metal balcony is also a later addition.
